That's exactly what Tappin and Cave do in this 300-page encyclopaedia of expertise.

For the first time, claim the authors, 150 top chief executives reveal what it is really like to be a CEO; what it has taken them to succeed; what motivates them.

Published just before the world economy imploded, the book examines the trends shaping the world, the early stages of the 'credit crunch' and the resulting fundamental change; change that most agreed was inevitable- and now have been proved right.

Later in the book, the different types of leader and their unique approaches are put under the spotlight. There is some inevitable simplification - for instance reducing leadership behaviour to five 'types' - but the conclusions have the air of authenticity and will be most useful in helping the reader understand his/her own 'type' and consequent potential shortcomings.

There is sound advice for up and coming leaders, together with a dire health/happiness/relationships warning - just in case anyone believes the world of the CEO is one of endless milk and honey.

Not an 'easy' read but one well worth the effort.

Steve to chair and moderate first ever Leaders in India forum

PRESS RELEASE: IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Secrets of CEOs and Leaders in India today confirm that Steve Tappin, CEO Confidant and CEO, The Secrets of CEOs, will be chairing and moderating the Leaders in India conference from 9-10th October in Mumbai.

Steve commented:

"Ever since we flagged up the new era of "hard globalization" in "The Secrets of CEOs", I've been spending as much time as possible in India. Indian businesses like Infosys and Wipro are great examples of smart CEOs creating global challenger businesses; the West is just starting to realize how much it has to learn from them.

The global "Leaders" series is definitely one of the few premier events for showcasing the latest in CEO thinking and I'm very pleased to be involved for the second year running and at the inaugural Leaders in India. We'll be taking the opportunity really to unpack how Indian businesses can exploit the global recession to steal a march in global markets and how you can best win at home in India. type='text'>The Times: Take Five

In its five pieces of advice for the week, The Times advises: "... Be realistic: A new book based on interviews with 150 CEOs – The Secrets of CEOs (Nicholas Brealey Publishing, £18) – makes fascinating reading. The overwhelming message is that being the boss is tough. It’s lonely, your personal life suffers and the international travel becomes a chore.Mervyn Davies, chairman and former chief executive of Standard Chartered, said: “If you’re a bad traveller and run an international business, it’s a nightmare. You’re not sleeping and you’re coming home wrecked. It’s a job, for Christ’s sake. When they put you in your box and it is over, you’re not going to be judged on how much profit you made.” “I can’t remember my boys growing up,” another said.
